'DiRT 3', 'FIFA 11' lead Xbox 360 chart

DiRT 3 has topped the Xbox 360 chart for a fifth week in a row.

It is followed by FIFA 11 in second and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean in third.

Elsewhere, Halo: Reach and Duke Nukem Forever re-enter the chart in seventh and tenth respectively.

Black Ops Rezurrection DLC arrives on Xbox

The fourth piece of premium DLC has today been released on Xbox 360 for Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops.

The 1200 Microsoft Point download contains one brand new Zombie Mode level as well as four re-mastered levels from the zombie selection in Call of Duty: World at War.

Interestingly, the new level – entitled Moon – takes place, as the name might suggest, on earth’s only satellite. It features futuristic weapons never before seen in the franchise.

Furthermore, consumers who buy the DLC will be rewarded with three free soundtrack downloads and an Xbox 360 theme.

Those who own the Hardened or Prestige editions of Black ops and have already downloaded the Classic Zombie map pack can now re-download the content and get the new level for free.

Xbox 360 Price Cut Isn't Needed, Microsoft Says

Hot off the heels of Sony slashing the price on its PlayStation 3 home console, Microsoft has released a statement about its Xbox 360 and how its own price tag won't be modified anytime soon.

Sony's PlayStation 3 has certainly been lagging behind Microsoft's Xbox 360 lately, as the North American console managed to consistently overtake the Japanese one in sales for the last year.

As such, during last week's Gamescom 2011 conference, Sony confirmed that the PlayStation 3 model with the 160GB hard drive isnow priced at $250, down from the previous $299 tag.

Now, all eyes are on Microsoft, who is expected to counter in a way this move from its competition. According to the company's Vice President of interactive entertainment, Chris Lewis, that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Pre-order sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Halo: Reach for the Xbox 360 ranked in the top 10 best-selling video game products this week at Toys R Us Inc.’s online division amid strong demand for the product.

This week, Halo: Reach ranked No. 6 in Toysrus.com’s Video Games division.

Retailers Amazon.com and Walmart.com are offering a $20 Video Games Credit with the purchase of the Halo: Reach standard SKU.

Halo: Reach will be sold at global retail Sept. 14.

The Xbox 360 250GB Halo: Reach Bundle will include a silver Xbox 360 250GB Slim SKU, two custom controllers, a copy of Halo: Reach, a token for the Limited Edition Elite Armor Set, an episode of Halo Legends and a Halo: Reach themed wired headset at $399.99.

Advanced sales for Activision Blizzard Inc.’s Call of Duty: Black Ops ranked in the top 10 this week at Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s online division amid strong demand for the product.

This week, the Call of Duty: Black Ops PS3 SKU ranked No. 6 at Walmart.com.

Microsoft will offer Xbox 360 for five more years

Microsoft will continue to offer the Xbox 360 for five years, expanding the life span of the console to 10 years, said Chris Lewis, vice president for interactive entertainment business in Europe.

The company is trying to lengthen the Xbox 360's shelf life with new features and services, such as the motion-sensing Kinect device, in a bid to wring more profit from the machine. Consoles are typically unprofitable in their first few years because the cost of materials takes time to drop.

The Kinect accessory goes on sale in November.

"Kinect really gives us, I think, a very genuine additional five years," Lewis said in an interview Wednesday at the Gamescom computer-games fair in Cologne, Germany.

Microsoft's decision marks a change in strategy from the first Xbox generation, when Microsoft released a new model after just four years.

New Xbox 360 model gives video game industry a boost

The video game industry is still not showing growth over the previous year, but it's clawing back slowly.

The industry posted revenue of $846.5 million in July, down just 1 percent from the same month last year. Sales for the year are still off by 8 percent from last year, but it's improved by 1 percent sequentially from June.

The big news was in hardware, which was up 12 percent to $313.8 million, largely on the strength of a new slimmed-down Xbox 360 from Microsoft. The Xbox 360 was the top-selling console with 443,500 sold, the first time it was No. 1 since September 2007. The Nintendo Wii followed with 253,900, while 214,500 of Sony's PlayStation 3 were sold.
